Excerpt from interview of Alberta Gagné (TC1998-1072-015) by Martha Pellerin. Part of a project (VFC1998-0007) on Franco-American song in New England funded by the Vermont Folklife Center and undertaken by Pellerin. Interview is one in a series of six conducted between 1995-01-09 and 1995-12-06 as an effort to document the French language song repertoire of Gagné.

“Lison était gentille et sage” (“Lison was kind and maidenly”) is a sentimental song about a young woman who succumbs to the charms of a young man at the village dance, but after two months of happiness, believes herself to be abandoned, until, suddenly, her “Jean” returns to ask her hand in marriage. It has all the hallmarks of a late 19th or early 20th century “pop” song, but to date no references to printed or recorded sources have surfaced.
Alberta Gagné sang this song twice during Martha Pellerin’s field recording visits; the other recording is AU1998-1075-009.

(BEGIN SINGING)

 

Lison était gentille et sage,

Ne connaissant rien de l'amour,

Mais à la fête du village,

Son cœur parla par un beau jour.

Un soir en dansant à la fête,

Près des chevaux de bois,

Un garçon lui tourna la tête,

Lui disant à demi-voix :

« Au son de la valse légère,

Qui vient doucement nous charmer,

Lison, ne soit pas trop sévère,

Laisse-moi t'aimer.

J'aurai des baisers, des caresses,

Qui te rendront folle d'amour,

Mon cœur tient tout bas la promesse,

De t'aimer toujours. »

 

Tous deux, dès le soir éphémère,

Deux mois de bonheur et d'amour,

Mais les doux baisers s'envolèrent,

Et Jean parut plus un beau jour.

Et quand revint encore la fête,

Lison écouta le refrain,

Qui chantait tout bas dans sa tête,

Lui disant, rappelant son chagrin :

« Au son de la valse légère,

Qui vient doucement nous charmer,

Lison, ne sois-pas trop sévère :

Laisse-moi t'aimer.

Déjà ces baisers, ces caresses,

T'avaient rendu folle d'amour.

Mon cœur croyait à sa promesse,

de t'aimer toujours. »

 

De loin son vieux père l'appelle :

« Quelqu'un il a dans la maison. »

C'est Jean qui vient encore chez elle,

Demander la main de Lison.

Tous deux, ils s'en vont à la danse,

Valser gaiment comme autrefois,

Et Jean, en suivant la cadence,

Dit encore à demi-voix :

« Au son de la valse légère,

Qui vient doucement nous charmer,

Lison, ne sois pas trop sévère,

Laisse-moi t'aimer.
