Description
Excerpt from interview of Alberta Gagné (TC1998-1073-014) by Martha Pellerin. Part of a project (VFC1998-0007) on Franco-American song in New England funded by the Vermont Folklife Center and undertaken by Pellerin. Interview is one in a series of six conducted between 1995-01-09 and 1995-12-06 as an effort to document the French language song repertoire of Gagné.
“Voici venir la neige” (”Here comes the snow“) is a mystery song. To date, no printed or recorded versions of it have surfaced either in France or Quebec. Sentimental songs about birds were a staple of popular French song in the latter 18th and 20th centuries.

Abstract
The snow is arriving with its white crystals; If the heavens protect you, poor little birds, gentle Providence will guard your nests during your absence; Leave, poor little ones; And when the frozen snow departs, if heaven protects you, you will joyfully return.

Refrain
Quand fuira la neige aimables oiseaux,
Quand fuira la neige revenez joyeux.
