Excerpt from interview of Alberta Gagné (TC1998-1070-009) by Martha Pellerin. Part of a project (VFC1998-0007) on Franco-American song in New England funded by the Vermont Folklife Center and undertaken by Pellerin. Interview is one in a series of six conducted between 1995-01-09 and 1995-12-06 as an effort to document the French language song repertoire of Gagné.

“Ma femme avait un beau chapeau’’ (‘’My wife had a beautiful hat’’). This counting song was popularized in the 1950s by Montreal harmonica player and singer Aldor Morin (1921-1998), and again the 1960’s under the title “Tire mon billet” by Montreal actor, folk singer, and songwriter Pierre Daignault (1925-2003). Morin is sometimes credited with its composition, although the song is highly derivative, borrowing both text elements and a melody which has been pressed into service for many different traditional French counting songs such as “Si j’avais des beaux souliers” and “Savez-vous ce qu’il y a.”

This particular song appears to have been sung by Laurianne Gagné. Her text and melody closely follow the Morin setting.
