Excerpt from interview of Alberta Gagné (TC1998-1070-010) by Martha Pellerin. Part of a project (VFC1998-0007) on Franco-American song in New England funded by the Vermont Folklife Center and undertaken by Pellerin. Interview is one in a series of six conducted between 1995-01-09 and 1995-12-06 as an effort to document the French language song repertoire of Gagné.
“Le bonheur de se revoir” (“The Happinesss of Meeting Again”) is an early 19th century Parisian pop song, with music by Parisian composer Amédée de Beauplan (1790-1853) and lyrics by Guttinguer. De Beauplan was by turns a playwright, composer, and painter, whose songs, musicales were sung widely in France and in Quebec for more than a century. The earliest known printings of the song are from Paris and Brussels ca. 1825. The lyrics appeared in the Quebec City mid-19th century song collection of popular songs of the day, Lyre Canadienne, Répertoire des meilleurs chanson et romances du jour. (Quebec [City]: Imprimerie Wm. et Fils, 1847): 134. 3 v.). There are no known 20th century recordings of the song from either Canada or Europe.
Alberta Gagné’s version generally replicates the original lyrics, although some of the lyrics in the first verse seem to have gotten lost along the way and replaced by borrowing words from the second verse.
