“Chancon de la marie” (“The Bride’s Song”). This is a traditional French ballad catalogued by French-Canadian ballad scholar Conrad Laforte under the title “Le plus jour de ma vie.” Laforte lists versions of this song from Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and Maine.

Here we all are assembled at the newlyweds’ table, we must drink and sing and not wish ourselves elsewhere; for it is a beautiful day, let’s take advantage of the good times; it’s a moment of pleasure which won’t last long; this is the most beautiful day, what a pleasant day for two young lovers who love each other tenderly; they have sworn to love each other tenderly to the last moment; today you leave, making your tearful farewells, asking God’s grace; may God bless your troubles as today is the day you must follow your husband.
