“En passant par la Lorraine” (“While Passing through Lorraine”) is a version of a French traditional song which has been in circulation at least since the mid-16th century. The song, which commonly goes by the title used in this manuscript, has been widely collected in France and Quebec, as well as Belgium and Ontario. In 1921, Montreal tenor Paul Dufault (1872-1930) recorded a setting of this song for the Starr label (issue # 12011). Abstract
[refrain: Dondaines, oh oh with my wooden shoes]; singer meets three captains while passing through Lorraine, they tell her she’s ugly, but she retorts that this can’t be true because the king’s son loves her and gave her as a gift a bouquet of marjoram which she planted in her field; if it flowers she’ll be queen, if it dies she’s wasting her time.
