Strophic song; refrain, followed by 3 verses with refrain after each verse.

“Dans le bon vieux temp” [“Dans le bon vieux temps”; “In the Good Old Days”] is a ca. 1928 song with words by Montreal singer, songwriter, actor, concert impresario, and jack-of-all-trades Conrad Gauthier, set to the melody of the 1836 French patriotic song “Ma Normandie” [“My Normandy”].

Gauthier (1885-1964) was at various times a director silent movies, a journalist, an accountant, and a municipal officer, but it was as a singer and actor that he made his name in Canada and the United States. In the 1920s, Gauthier was a pioneer in radio and in the recording of Quebec folk music, making 78s of more than 100 songs and monologues for the Victor and Columbia labels, often with Elzéar Hamel. He also was a concert impresario and lead vocalist at the immensely popular Veillées du bon vieux temps, a theatrical show featuring skits, songs, dances, and monologues evoking rural Quebec traditions, music, and dances. Gauthier founded the Veillées in 1921 and produced them until 1941 at the Monument national theatre in Montreal.

“Ma Normandie” [“My Normandie”] is a patriotic song about the Normandy region of France composed in 1836 by French singer-songwriter Frédéric Bérat (1801-1855) of Sainte-Adresse à Rouen. The song gained tremendous celebrity throughout France in the 1800s and is today widely used as the unofficial hymn of Normandie by residents there.

Conrad Gauthier and Béatrice Lapierre-Latour recorded “Dans le bon vieux temps” for the Montreal Victor label in 1928 (issue # 263513, side A); that same year, Vermont-born Montreal singer, storyteller and actor Eugène Daignault (1895-1960) and his wife recorded this song for rival Montreal label Compo/Starr (issue # 15438; matrix # 3255). Daignault was one of the stars of Gauthier’s Veillées du bon vieux temps troupe. You can hear the Daignaults’ recording on the Library and Archives Canada website, The Virtual Gramophone: http://amicus.collectionscanada.gc.ca/gramophone-bin/Main/ItemDisplay?l=0&l_ef_l=-1&id=821714.61829&v=1&lvl=1&coll=24&rt=1&itm=31398830
