Miscellaneous Notes

In setting up the photograph, Steve and Shirley took care to conceal his amputated leg by moving the wheelchair up to the table. Steve died shortly after the photograph was made.

INTERVIEW EXCERPT

The interview was done with Shirley after Steve had died. I also have an interview with one of Shirley's daughters, Karlene Allen. The two interviews listened to together have some nice associations.

Shirley:

"We lost a cow the other night out here. Well, she had a little trouble calfing. This is an older cow, old cow. She wouldn't pay any attention to her calf and she went right back in the tile, you know, where she was. Another cow she was bellering and carrying on so we let her out and she cleaned the calf up. In the meantime, Glen looked at her again and he said, 'Well, I think maybe she's come down with milk fever.' So he went and got his bottle to warm it up so he could give her the stuff. They get down and they can't get up, and you give them this bottle of medicine and they get right up afterwards - well, a few minutes afterwards. And then the next minute he looked at her and he said, 'Mom, I think she's dying.' Sure enough - I fed the calves for him, he was a little late because he delivered the calf and everything - looked down there, and my gosh she's gone. You know what we thought - he never lost a cow from just calfing like that. So we thought it must be a heart attack, cause she went so quick. We just call a guy from Brandon - he comes and gets her for dog food or whatever."
