Excerpt from interview of Alberta Gagné (TC1998-1074-009) by Martha Pellerin. Part of a project (VFC1998-0007) on Franco-American song in New England funded by the Vermont Folklife Center and undertaken by Pellerin. Interview is one in a series of six conducted between 1995-01-09 and 1995-12-06 as an effort to document the French language song repertoire of Gagné.
“Lorsque je t’ai connu“, (“When I met you “) is a sentimental romance which relates a story of abandonment, forgiveness and reconciliation between two sweethearts. The text and melody suggest that it dates to the latter 1800s or early 1900s and it could as easily have originated in Quebec as in France, but to date no references have been found to provide further details about its provenance.

Abstract
When I met you, you charmed my heart; but since then, my heart is in exile; I must therefore tell you my heart’s secret; oh yes, the love I have for you will never disappear. You want to abandon me to love another, but remember, everyone will have their turn; you will have regrets, but it will be too late; because I will already be too far away to calm your sorrow. It’s you, my love, who wished this; for a kiss I refused; if you wish to return, because I pardon you, oh yes, return, return, dear, that I may die in your arms.
