Part of a project (VFC1998-0007) on Franco-American song in New England funded by the Vermont Folklife Center and undertaken by Pellerin. Interview is one in a series of six conducted between 1995-01-09 and 1995-12-06 as an effort to document the French language song repertoire of Gagné.

“Et haut, là-bas sur les montagnes” (“And high up there upon the mountains”) is a French song which has been in circulation at least since the early 1600s (the first known documented appearance in a French manuscript dates to 1633). It has circulated widely both in France and Quebec, as well as in Belgium, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Louisiana, Italy, and Switzerland. In Quebec, versions of this song have been widely disseminated in print and on recording. Alberta Gagné’s melody is typical of versions from France and Quebec alike. The narrative of this song varies, but most versions concern a shepherdess courted by a young man who offers her better wages if she will share his bed.

Abstract

And up there in the mountains, there are white sheep; the shepherdess who takes care of them has a white apron; She sees a handsome young man approach; “How much do you earn a year?” “Oh, I don’t earn much, five or six francs a year;” “Oh come with me, my beauty, and you’ll earn as much; You won’t have much to do, just make and unmake the bed; you and I will sleep together;” “I don’t sleep with men, because my mother forbids it;” “You will sleep with my mother and with me from time to time.”
