Description
French language song text from VFC2006-0002 Beaudoin Family Collection. MS2011-3223-003 Alice Lacourse Danis Songbook. Pp. 3.
“Ma mère m’envoie-t-au marché” (“My Mother Sent Me to Market”) is a traditional French-language folk song and round in which the singer lists purchases made at the market (usually beginning with a pair of sabots (wooden shoes), followed by animals and/or musical instruments) and incorporates imitations of the sounds or calls made by each of the purchases. In some cases, the verses are sung cumulatively, so that each new verse incorporates the purchases and sounds from the previous verses. Versions of this song have been collected in many regions of France, in French-speaking regions of Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, throughout Quebec, and in Louisiana and Maine. Melodies and shopping lists vary, but the opening line “Ma mère m’envoie-t-au marché” (with the father sometimes substituting in place of the mother) seems to be a stable element. To see a French group demonstrating a version of the song with an accompanying ronde: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuNTy3uHH30
