Description

French language song text from VFC2006-0002 Beaudoin Family Collection. MS2011-3223-014 Alice Lacourse Danis Songbook. Pp. 14.

“Meilleur mangeur au monde” (“Best Eater in the World”).
The text of this comical song suggests that it is a popular song composed in Quebec or France some time in the late 1800s or early 1900s, but to date only one other version is known to have been documented, recorded from Acadian singer Suzanne Brideau in 1977 by folklorists Vivian Labrie and Robert Bouthillier. Suzanne Brideau sang the song to a melody commonly associated in Quebec with the traditional song “A la claire fontaine.”

Abstract

When he was born, we baptized him “the best eater in the world” and the name stuck; he’s always hungry; one day while reading the paper, he saw a headline about a big sale on grease and he ate three barrels; one day while at confession, he ate the missal and the priest’s rosary; we took him to church and he ate the plaster beams on the balconies; one day at the circus he was overcome by indigestion from eating the lions; as he was ill, we took him to the hospital where he ate the attendant, shouting “what a feast!”
