Scope and Content Note:

Strophic song, two verses with one refrain after first verse

“Cest a moi ce jolie bebe la” [“C’est à moi, ce joli bébé là”; “She”s Mine, That Pretty Baby There”] is a French-language translation of the American popular song "Baby Face,” the work of composer Harry Akst and lyricist Benny Davis. The song was published in 1926, and singer Jean Garber had a number-one hit with the song that same year. The French-language version is the work of songwriter, composer, pianist, and recording studio owner/producer Roméo Beaudry (1882-1932). Beaudry was, along with his friend Herbert Berliner, the most important producer of Canadian artists in the first half of the 20th century. During the 1920s, Beaudry’s Montreal-based Starr studio produced 693 francophone records, featuring almost every great name in Quebec lyric, folk and variety song with equal success. He also produced songs with original lyrics and melodies as well as French-language translation of popular American hits of the era. In November 1926, Québec baritone Odilon Rochon recorded Beaudry’s version of this song on the Montreal-based Compo label, which owned the Starr label (issue # 15301; matrix # E5277): http://amicus.collectionscanada.gc.ca/gramophone-bin/Main/ItemDisplay?l=0&l_ef_l=0&id=&v=1&lvl=1&coll=24&rt=1&itm=31398319&rsn=S_WWWjjaeGafLW&all=1&dt=AW+|odilon|&spi=-&rp=2&v=1.

Laissez moi vous dire
Ce qui me rend joyeux
Ce dont je reve nuit et jour
Je suis devenu folle d’amoureux
D’une blonde charmante
Au beau yeux de velour
Et depuis mon coeur chante
Cette chanson d’amour
