Description

French language song text from VFC2006-0002 Beaudoin Family Collection. MS2011-3222-013 Eva Lacourse Songbook. Pp. 25-26.

Strophic song; two verses, one refrain after first verse.

“Jeannine au temp des lilas” [“Jeannine au temps des lilas“; “Jeannine in Lilac Season”]  is a French-language setting of “Jeannine, I Dream of Lilac Time,” a 1928 American popular song with lyrics by Russian-born American Tin Pan Alley songwriter L. Wolfe Gilbert (1886-1970) and music by composer, conductor, clarinetist, pianist, business executive and music director Nathaniel Shikret (1889-1982). It was the theme song of the 1928 motion picture Lilac Time, starring Gary Cooper and Colleen Moore. The song sold almost two million copies of sheet music and was recorded by over a hundred top artists, including Louis Armstrong and John McCormack.

The French-language translation is the work of Montreal songwriter, composer, pianist, and recording studio owner/producer, Roméo Beaudry.

Beaudry (1882-1932) was, along with his friend Herbert Berliner, the most important producer of Canadian artists in the first half of the 20th century. During the 1920s, Beaudry’s Montreal-based Starr studio produced 693 francophone records, featuring almost every great name in Quebec lyric, folk and variety song with equal success. He also produced songs with original lyrics and melodies as well as French-language translation of popular American hits of the era. In late 1928, Quebecois baritone Georges Beauchemin recorded Beaudry’s French-language version in the Montreal studios of the the Victor label (issue # 263558); Quebecois tenor Arthur Lapierre also recorded this song the same year for the Compo label, of which Starr was a subsidiary (issue # 15496; matrix # 3433).
