Description

French language song text from VFC2006-0002 Beaudoin Family Collection. MS2011-3222-015 Eva Lacourse Songbook. Pp. 27-29.

Strophic song; two verses, one refrain after first verse.

“Parmi mes souvenir” [“Parmi mes souvenirs” ; “Among My Memories”] is a French-language setting of the 1927 popular song “Among My Souvenirs,” with lyrics by American songwriter Edgar Leslie (1885-1976) and music by British popular music composer and publisher Horatio Nicholls (aka Leslie Wright) (1888-1964). The earliest known version of "Among My Souvenirs" was recorded by The Kit-Cat Band on September 19, 1927. It was first a number one chart hit for Paul Whiteman in 1928.

The French-language lyrics are the work of Montreal songwriter, composer, pianist, and recording studio owner/producer, Roméo Beaudry. Beaudry (1882-1932) was, along with his friend Herbert Berliner, the most important producer of Canadian artists in the first half of the 20th century. During the 1920s, Beaudry’s Montreal-based Starr studio produced 693 francophone records, featuring almost every great name in Quebec lyric, folk and variety song with equal success. He also produced songs with original lyrics and melodies as well as French-language translation of popular American hits of the era. In 1928, Montreal baritone Albert Marier recorded Beaudry’s setting with a piano accompaniment at the Compo studios, which owned the Starr label (issue # 15423; matrix # 3179).

Abstract

Abandoned sweetheart has only her memorabilia (love letters, a pink ribbon) as reminders of a love that was betrayed.

Et dans mon coeur laisser

Un portrait des beau jour
Quelque letter d’amour

Un ruban rose autour

Et cette fleur fanne
Que tu m’avais donne
C’est mon plus cher souvenir
