“Ramona” [“Ramona”; “Ramona”] is a French-language setting of the popular 1928 American song “Ramona,” with lyrics written by Russian-born American Tin Pan Alley songwriter L. Wolfe Gilbert (1886-1970) and music by pianist, singer, and song composer Mabel Wayne (1890-1978), who specialized in “Latin-tinged” songs. It was created as the title song for the 1928 adventure film-romance Ramona (based on the novel Ramona by Helen Hunt Jackson). “Ramona” was recorded in 1928 by Dolores Del Rio for the film. Gene Austin's version charted for 17 weeks, eight weeks at #1, and easily topped a million in sales. The song was a popular recording success, usually performed as a romantic ballad, sometimes with a “Latin” inflection.
“Ramona” was translated into and recorded in French in France. In Quebec, Montreal songwriter, composer, pianist, and recording studio owner/producer, Roméo Beaudry, took Wayne’s music and paired it with a set of original lyrics.
Beaudry (1882-1932) was, along with his friend Herbert Berliner, the most important producer of Canadian artists in the first half of the 20th century. During the 1920s, Beaudry’s Montreal-based Starr studio produced 693 francophone records, featuring almost every great name in Quebec lyric, folk and variety song with equal success. He also produced songs with original lyrics and melodies as well as French-language translation of popular American hits of the era. In 1928. In 1928, three different French-Canadian popular singers (Georges Beauchemin, Jean Cartier and Albert Marier) made recordings of Beaudry’s setting of “Ramona.” Marier’s recording at the Montreal Compo studio, which owned the Starr label (issue #15445; matrix # 3293), as was Jean Cartier’s (issue # 15461; matrix #3289).
