Description

French language song text from VFC2006-0002 Beaudoin Family Collection. MS2011-3222-039 Eva Lacourse Songbook. Pp. 67-69.

Strophic song; two verses with a refrain after the first verse.

“Soir d’Espagne” [“Soir d’Espagne”; “Spanish Evening”] is a transcription of Roméo Beaudry’s Montreal songwriter, composer, pianist, and recording studio owner/producer Roméo Beaudry’s 1926 French-language setting of the popular American song “In a Little Spanish Town,” which was written that same year. The music to “In a Little Spanish Town’” is by pianist, singer, composer, and songwriter Mabel Wayne (1890-1978), who was the first American woman to write a hit song. With lyrics co-written by Sam M. Lewis (1885-1959) and Joe Young 1889-1939), this song was a 1926 hit for Paul Whiteman & his Orchestra, whose recording topped the U.S. charts for eight weeks. Beaudry’s lyrics, as is often the case, are essentially a rewriting of the song, with occasional references to the original. His setting was published in Toronto in 1926 as sheet music by Leo Feist Ltd. In 1927, Montreal baritone Jean Cartier recorded Beaudry’s setting on the Compo/Starr label (issue #15314; matrix # 2724).

Les beaux soirs d’ete
Me grisent de doux souvenirs
Et d’ardent desirs
Dans leur language il me disent
Souvient toi toujour du premier amour

Refrain
En espagne au clair de lune
Par un beau soir d’ete
J’ai dit Anita la brune
Aux grand yeux veloute
Tes baisers comme des fleurs
Ont grise mon coeur
Oui je te fais la promesse
Oh ma belle Anita
De te gardi ma tendresse
Que je n’oublira pas
Tout le bonheur
Quand une heure j’ai goute
En ce beau pays d’Espagne
Par un beau soir d’ete

2
Mes souvenirs me ramenent
Vers ce pays bleu ou je fut heureux
Dans cette lande lointoine
J’ai laisse mon coeur
Au milieu des pleur
