Description
French language song text from VFC2006-0002 Beaudoin Family Collection. MS2011-3223-007 Alice Lacourse Danis Songbook. Pp. 6.
“Hier au soir j’ai été dancer” (“Last Night I Went Dancing”).
This much-sung French ronde has been in circulation in France at least since the first half of the 1600s. Versions have been widely documented in France and Quebec as well as in Belgium, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Ontario, Rhode Island, and Switzerland. Another version of this song appears later in this manuscript under the title ”J’ai tant dansé.”
In 1925, Montreal singer Charles Marchand recorded a version of this song under the title “J’ai tant danse, j’ai tant saute” for the Starr/Gennett label (issue # 15221; matrix #1795). Marchand (1890-1930) founded a vocal quartet called “Le Carillon canadien” in order to promote French-Canadian folk songs and new songs inspired by traditional customs and settings. You can hear Marchand’s rendition on the Library and Archives Canada website, The Virtual Gramophone:http://amicus.collectionscanada.gc.ca/gramophone-bin/Main/ItemDisplay?l=0&l_ef_l=-1&id=646469.467855&v=1&lvl=1&coll=24&rt=1&itm=31398151&rsn=S_WWWbia3BLUZs&all=1&dt=AW+|j%27ai|+AND+|tant|+AND+|dans%E9|&spi=-

Abstract
Last night I went dancing; I got my shoes full of holes; I went to the shoemaker and asked if he would repair my shoes in exchange for five cents; he replied that five cents was insufficient and that a kiss was required as well.
