“Nous avons une fillette” (“We Have a Young Daughter”) is a version of French singer-songwriter, poet, and plawright Théodore Botrel’s turn-of-the-20th century popular song “Marie ta fille” (“Marry Off Your Daughter”). Born in Britanny, Botrel (1868-1925) rose to fame as a singer in Paris in the mid-1890s. He specialized in the composition of French-language songs set in Brittany which evoked sentimental scenes of love, old age, patriotism, prayers, and minor melodrama. Botrel made two concert tours to Quebec in 1903 and again in 1922, where his songs enjoyed considerable success in live performances, printed settings, and recordings. In 1922, Botrel recording a setting of this song at the Montreal studios of the Victor/His Master’s Voice label (issue # 26315, side A). Abstract
[refrain? Marry your son when you wish, your daughter, when it’s possible]; we have a young daughter who would very much like, poor thing, to marry as soon as possible; there are plenty of fellows in the village all pretty poor, I’d bet; they find her not rich to their their taste; For myself, when I met her mother, I wasted no time: I suit you, you suit me; I’ll marry you; stay, daughter, my poor Marie; I do not at all wish to put you into a lottery, nor escort you to market; a husband becomes a dream; the marrying kind are on strike; perhaps they will start a union.
