I’ll sing you a little song to try to make you laugh; as we are not pickles, one must live before dying; you know I sing badly, but I will sing all the same; those who do not wish to hear me, plug your ears; the day I came into the world was a great feast day; never had a such a thick-headed child been brought into the world; in spite of my imperfections, I was the joy of my father as well as the neighborhood, and my mother’s idol; the day I was baptized, we had fun; that day I got drunk with good wine and rum; I drank wine with my godfather, liqueur with my godmother; my father didn’t have any because he was already up to his ears; my dear friends, I will tell you how my beauty fades; the young man who courted me has become my husband; since our marriage, he loves me to distraction, but it would be all the same to him to kill me as to take my life away.
