“Priez, aimer, chanter” [Priez, aimez, chantez”; “Pray, Love, Sing”] is a classical, religious song with lyrics by Swiss poet and writer Adolphe Ribaux (1864-1915) and music by French classical and popular composer Louis Gregh (1843-1915). This song was first popularized in Quebec by furrier and singer Pierre-Aurèle Asselin (1881-1964). A furrier who had sang as a tenor in church for some time, Asselin made his his first professional performance for the Ladies’ Morning Musical Club of Quebec City in 1916. He was well received, and within a year had signed a contract with Columbia Records. He traveled to New York where, along with arias from French operas, songs from operettas, and other classical songs, he recorded “Priez, aimez, chantez" on the Columbia label (issue # E3213; matrix # 44260). In 1918, Asselin made a cylinder recording of this song on the Edison label (issue # E3213; matrix # 44260) and a third recording, this time on disc, also for Edison, in 1920 (issue # 74001; matrix # 6067). In 1922, celebrated Montreal tenor Paul Dufault (1872-1930) recorded this song in the Montreal studios of Victor and Berliner (issue # 26312). In 1930, Montreal baritone Paul Larose also recorded this song for Victor (issue # 263671). Dufault’s 1922 recording for Victor can be heard on the Library and Archives Canada site, The Virtual Gramophone: http://amicus.collectionscanada.gc.ca/gramophone-bin/Main/ItemDisplay?l=0&l_ef_l=-1&id=350381.360829&v=1&lvl=1&coll=24&rt=1&itm=42159962&rsn=S_WWWnbaWhNTsY&all=1&dt=AW+|priez,|+AND+|aimez|&spi=-&rp=1&v=1.
