Strophic song, three closely related refrains interspersed by two verses

“Larme Damour” [“Larmes d’amour”; “Tears of Love”] is a French waltz-time romantic song with lyrics by singer, songwriter and playwright Pierre Chapelle (1876-1926) and music by pianist and composer Alfredo Barbirolli (ca. 1872-1931). The earliest known printing of this song dates to 1911, printed by F. D. Marchetti in Paris. In 1925, Quebecois baritone Joseph Beaulieu (1865-1965) recorded this song with piano accompaniment in the Montreal studios of the Compo label (issue # 15195; matrix # 1683); in 1928, Quebecois tenor Émile Larochelle also recorded this song with piano accompaniment in the Montreal studios of Victor (issue # 263509).

Abstract

Song relates how the tears of love are first founded on the naievete of new love, then are transformed by cruel deceptions and loss, but when one's sweetheart returns, tears of love become tears of happiness.
