“Les orphelin dans les Flames” [“Les orphelins dans les flammes”; “The Orphans in the Flames”) is a song composed in Quebec some time in the late 1800s or first half of the 1900s. It is one of a number of songs which relate a tragic incident — in this case, a fire in an orphanage — using an already well-known melody. No commercial recordings or printings of this song have been found, and the song’s text does not identify either the date or location of the fire, making it impossible to determine the origins of the song. What is clear is that it passed into the folk song repertory in Quebec and Prince Edward Island. Three different versions of this song appear in the Laforte catalogue of traditional French-language songs of Quebec, under the title “Incendie à l’orphelinat” (“The Fire at the Orphanage) (: VI-C-8.75.1). All three collected versions of the song are set to the melody of “Minuit chrétiens,” (“O Holy Night”), a very well-known French Christmas song with music by wine merchant Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) and lyrics by poet Placide Cappeau (1808-1877). The song gained widespread and durable popularity as part of the Christmas Eve Midnight Mass in Quebec and its melody has been used over and over in Quebec for the composition of songs memorializing tragic events, including several fatal fires and, most notably, the wreck of the RMS Empress of Ireland, which sank in the St. Lawrence River in 1914 with 1,1012 deaths.

Song commemorates a fatal fire in an orphanage and the bravery of two girls who sacrificed their lives to save others.
